Among the graduates of the Medical University of Gdańsk there are many distinguished individuals from the world of medicine and beyond. Presented here are outstanding figures from public and political life, as well as alumni who have earned widespread respect and recognition, achieved significant success, held positions of responsibility, or attained prominent professional roles.

Prof. Anna Dominiczak

A graduate of the Medical Academy of Gdańsk (1978), Prof. Anna Dominiczak served as Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow. She held the title of Regius Professor of Medicine (Internal Medicine) at the University of Glasgow from 2010 to 2020.

Marek Balicki

A graduate of the Medical Academy of Gdańsk (1978), Marek Balicki is a physician specialising in anaesthesiology and psychiatry, as well as a prominent public figure and politician. He served for many years as a Member of Parliament and twice held the office of Minister of Health. Between 1998 and 2001, he was an adviser to the President of the Republic of Poland.

Prof. Anna Dominiczak

A graduate of the Medical Academy of Gdańsk (1978), Prof. Anna Dominiczak served as Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow. She held the title of Regius Professor of Medicine (Internal Medicine) at the University of Glasgow from 2010 to 2020.

Professor Dominiczak is a specialist in internal medicine, hypertension and endocrinology, and has served as an honorary medical consultant and member of the Health Board of NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde.

She is internationally recognised as one of the leading scientists in cardiovascular disease, hypertension, cardiovascular genomics and precision medicine. In 2016, she was awarded the title of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for her outstanding contributions to cardiovascular research.

In 2019, she was appointed to the Medical Research Council (MRC) and recognised as a Health Innovation Champion. She is a Fellow or member of numerous prestigious organisations, including the Royal College of Physicians, the American Heart Association, the Academy of Medical Sciences, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the European Society of Cardiology and the Royal Society of Biology.

She is also affiliated with a wide range of professional societies, including the British Medical Association, the British and Irish Hypertension Society, the European Society of Hypertension, the International Society of Hypertension, the British Endocrine Society, the American Physiological Society, the British Atherosclerosis Society, the British Cardiovascular Society and the European Atherosclerosis Society.

Between 2013 and 2015, she served as President of the European Society of Hypertension. She has also held numerous roles in national and international research committees and scientific advisory boards, including within the Academy of Medical Sciences, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin. From 2012 to 2015, she was Vice-President for Life Sciences of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Professor Dominiczak is Chair of the Translational Research Group of the Medical Research Council and a member of the Council of Heads of Medical Schools, the Council of the Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Scientific Advisory Board of Inserm. She has authored over 500 publications in leading peer-reviewed journals.

Marek Balicki

A graduate of the Medical Academy of Gdańsk (1978), Marek Balicki is a physician specialising in anaesthesiology and psychiatry, as well as a prominent public figure and politician. He served for many years as a Member of Parliament and twice held the office of Minister of Health. Between 1998 and 2001, he was an adviser to the President of the Republic of Poland.

He is a member of the National Development Council appointed by President Andrzej Duda, a member of the Bioethics Committee at the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Council of the Polish League Against Cancer Foundation, and President of the Association of Psychiatric Wards in General Hospitals. He is also actively involved in the Polish Psychiatric Association.

Appointed by the Minister of Health as Plenipotentiary for Psychiatric Reform, he currently heads the Office for the Pilot Programme of the National Mental Health Programme at the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology in Warsaw.

He has been actively engaged in numerous professional and social organisations. He previously served as long-standing President of the Warsaw Medical Aid Society for the Care of Mentally and Neurologically Ill Patients and was a member of the Main Board of the Polish Oncology Union. He also initiated the establishment of the College of Family Physicians in Poland.

Marek Balicki has delivered lectures and postgraduate training in areas including healthcare organisation and financing, healthcare management and human rights. He is the author of numerous publications in these fields.
