Dr. Habil. Aleksandra Markiewicz

Aleksandra Markiewicz is a cancer researcher at the Laboratory of Translational Oncology, Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology, University of Gdańsk and Medical University of Gdańsk. She obtained her PhD in biochemistry in 2015 from the University of Gdansk and graduated from Postgraduate School of Molecular Medicine (Warsaw). She obtained habilitation in medical sciences at the Medical University of Gdańsk in 2024. From 201 to 2017 she conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Regensburg in the group of Prof. Christoph Klein, studying the molecular evolution of disseminated melanoma cells and metastatic colony formation.

Her research focuses on the mechanisms of cancer aggressiveness and dissemination, particularly epithelial–mesenchymal plasticity and circulating tumour cells in breast cancer. She combines analysis of patient-derived material with single-cell genomic and transcriptomic approaches and experimental models to investigate tumour-cell heterogeneity and metastatic progression.

She has led projects funded by the National Science Centre and other national programmes and has participated in international projects on disseminated cancer cells, CTC enrichment and single-cell analysis.
