Ultra Health Registry is an interdisciplinary research project designed to comprehensively assess the effects of extreme endurance exercise, specifically a 100 km ultramarathon, on adult health.
About the Project
The project focuses on analysing the body’s response to prolonged physical effort and the recovery processes that follow. The assessments cover the functioning of key physiological and psychological systems, including cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, nervous and musculoskeletal systems, as well as mental health.
The study included 52 ultramarathon participants aged 45 and older. The race took place on 16th August 2025 in Gołąbki, near Gniezno, Poland, as part of the 4th Sun Festival.
Data were collected at several time points: before the race, immediately after its completion, several hours later, and after a few days. This study design makes it possible to capture both the body’s immediate response to extreme exertion and the subsequent recovery process.
As part of Ultra Health Registry, a broad range of assessments is being conducted, including blood and urine analyses, cardiac and glucose monitoring, evaluation of nervous and respiratory system function, as well as psychological, nutritional and physiotherapeutic assessments.
The findings of Ultra Health Registry will contribute to a better understanding of how individuals aged 45 and older adapt to intense endurance activity. They may also support the development of safer training, recovery, and preventive health strategies for physically active adults.
Ultra Health Registry is being conducted by experts and academic staff from the Medical University of Gdańsk, Poznań University of Medical Sciences, the Medical University of Łódź, the University of Gdańsk, Poznań University of Physical Education and Sport, and Gdańsk University of Physical Education and Sport.
