Representatives of the Department of Emergency Medicine of the Medical University of Gdańsk and the Clinical Emergency Department of the University Clinical Centre, the MUG hospital, took part in the International Conference on Emergency Medicine ICEM 2026, held on 9th–13rd June 2026 in Hamburg. Organised by the International Federation of Emergency Medicine (IFEM), the event is the world’s largest forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of emergency medicine. IFEM brings together 70 national scientific societies and works to promote the development of high-quality care for patients requiring urgent medical assistance.
During the conference, researchers from the MUG presented the results of their studies. Ewelina Stępniewska, M.D., delivered a critical analysis of data concerning the rationale for using biochemical markers of brain injury in patients with traumatic brain injury, initiating a discussion on the application of TBI biomarkers in the geriatric population. Karolina Szaruta-Raflesz, MD, presented data on unavoidable deaths in the emergency department.
The growing international recognition of the Department of Emergency Medicine of the MUG was reflected in the team being entrusted with organising and chairing a special session devoted to the quality of emergency department performance and patient safety. The unit’s scientific output in this area is the result of many years of systematic qualitative analyses concerning the work of the Clinical Emergency Department of the UCC.
During the session, Karolina Szaruta-Raflesz, M.D., discussed conclusions drawn from a pragmatic analysis of deaths in the emergency department. Particular interest among participants was aroused by the concept of “unexpected cardiac arrest in the emergency department” (Unex-CAED), an original measure of emergency department performance quality developed at the Clinical Emergency Department of the UCC. Andrzej Lubiewski, M.D., presented an analysis of patient rehospitalisation, with particular emphasis on patients leaving the emergency department before being seen by a physician. Prof. Mariusz Siemiński, Head of the Department of Emergency Medicine, presented a new quality indicator for emergency department performance, not previously described in the scientific literature, based on an analysis of mortality among patients transferred for further hospitalisation to other departments.
The next edition of the conference will take place in 2027 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
