Prof. Mariusz Siemiński, Head of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical University of Gdańsk, has been elected Co-Chair of the Neurotraumatology Scientific Panel of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN).
Prof. Siemiński, a neurologist and specialist in emergency medicine, devoted many years of his academic career to research in the field of sleep medicine. Following his appointment as Head of the Department of Emergency Medicine, his scientific focus shifted towards emergency conditions, particularly brain injury in acute illnesses such as septic shock and traumatic injuries.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability worldwide, especially among young adults. For this reason, investigating the mechanisms of TBI and exploring therapeutic options constitutes a key area of interest for the European Academy of Neurology. For several years, the team of the Department and Clinic of Emergency Medicine has been conducting research in the field of neurotraumatology.
Over the next two years, the primary task undertaken by Prof. Siemiński together with the Neurotraumatology Scientific Panel will be the development of new European Academy of Neurology guidelines for the management of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).
The European Academy of Neurology is a professional and scientific organisation bringing together approximately 45,000 European neurologists and 48 national neurological societies. Its scientific panels consist of experts in specific neurological subspecialties and are responsible for developing international diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines, as well as initiating and coordinating international research projects.
