Spotkanie mentoringowe z dr Kariną Kowal

Specjalistka w dziedzinie prawa medycznego z Toronto w Kanadzie dr Karina Kowal, absolwentka naszej Uczelni z 1999 r. weźmie udział w spotkaniu zorganizowanym przez Biuro Umiędzynarodowienia Uczelni. Anglojęzyczne wydarzenie pt. Joy, tears, medicine and the law odbędzie się 9 października 2023 r. o godz. 16:00 w sali konferencyjnej w bud. nr 13 (II piętro). Karina Kowal, Ph.D. is an alumna of the Medical University of Gdańsk and is now a medicolegal litigation strategist at one of the most prominent law firms in Canada. The expert provides advice to lawyers who handle litigation and assists them in making reasoned and well founded decisions. She uses her extensive knowledge and expertise across medicine, law and judicial decision making to find the right balance of treatment, compensation and justice that will help everyone involved.

Karina Kowal, Ph.D. received her degree in medicine from the Medical University of Gdańsk in 1999 and began her career as a physician in medical rehabilitation. After obtaining her second, graduate degree from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montreal in insurance medicine and medicolegal expertise, she began conducting independent medical examinations for both plaintiff and defence lawyers for law suits.

The specialist then went on to complete a Master of Laws specializing in health law and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) at Osgoode Hall Law School (York University) in 2014, at one of the most prominent law schools in Canada. She was appointed as a judge by the government in Canada to a specialised court handling only medical matters, such as motor vehicle accidents and complaints against health professionals. Karina Kowal, Ph.D. served as judge on this specialized health court from 2012 to 2022.

Karina Kowal, Ph.D. is also board certified by the American Medical Association (AMA) as a Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME) and also holds the following designations and memberships:

  • Qualified Arbitrator (Q.Arb.) from the ADR Institute of Canada
  • Licensed paralegal, notary public and member of the Law Society of Ontario
  • Certification in psychotherapy for physicians – University of Toronto
  • Executive committee – board of directors and treasurer of the Medical Legal Society of Toronto (MLST)
  • Member of the Canadian Society of Medical Evaluators (CSME)
  • Member of the American Board of Independent Medical Evaluators (ABIME)
  • Member of the Society of Ontario Adjudicators and Regulators (SOAR)
  • Member of the ADR Institute of Ontario and Canada (ADRIO and ADRIC)

The expert teaches law students at both Osgoode Hall and the University of Toronto as well as medical students at the University of Toronto in the areas of professional ethics, and medical consent and capacity. She has returned now to the Medical University of Gdańsk, for the first time in 25 years, to share her experiences, knowledge and insights with the students of our University.
