We are intensively expanding our scientific activity, with a particular emphasis on interdisciplinary research. Many projects are carried out in cooperation with renowned international research centres, which strengthens their global dimension. This also applies to initiatives funded by institutions such as the National Science Centre and the Foundation for Polish Science.

Partnership with industry and the socio-economic environment

The Medical University of Gdańsk is dynamically developing cooperation with the socio-economic environment, including the transfer of knowledge and technology to industry. As a result, the University is becoming an increasingly attractive partner for joint research and innovation initiatives. MUG researchers are distinguished by a high level of innovation, particularly in the fields of medicine, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical sciences, and their research demonstrates significant translational and commercial potential.

Modern scientific and educational infrastructure

As part of a consistently implemented institutional development strategy, numerous research and educational facilities have been modernised. Laboratories, research units, lecture halls, and teaching facilities have been refurbished and upgraded. Key investments include, among others, the Medical Simulation Centre, the Sports Centre, and the modern buildings of the Invasive and Non-Invasive Medicine Centre for, which, together with the University Clinical Centre, form a unique medical and scientific complex on a European scale.

Education based on advanced technologies

The Medical Simulation Centre is equipped with next-generation medical simulators, a fully equipped operating theatre, and a virtual reality laboratory. It is here that the MUG students acquire practical clinical skills in realistic conditions before commencing direct work with patients.

Medical University of Gdańsk – a leader in innovation, collaboration, and responsibility

Innovative Medicine and Social Mission

MUG institutions implement innovative therapies in areas such as rare diseases, strokes, oncology, cardiology, and transplantology. Thanks to the support of the Medical Research Agency, the university has secured over PLN 214 million for the development of clinical research and pioneering therapies.

A University Alliance for Joint Development

In 2020, MUG, together with Gdańsk University of Technology and the University of Gdańsk, established the Daniel Fahrenheit University Alliance, which aims to combine the resources and potential of the three largest universities in the Tri-City area.

Social Responsibility and Internationalization

Through the University’s Social Responsibility Declaration, MUG promotes sustainable development and openness. It educates over 6,300 people, including approximately 1,000 international students – the highest number among universities in Gdańsk.

THE OLDEST MEDICAL UNIVERSITY IN POMERANIA

1945 OCT 08

Akademia Lekarska (Physician’s Academy) was founded in Gdańsk on October 8th 1945

Its history relates to the centuries-long tradition of medicine in Gdańsk, practiced by surgeons associated in the Surgeon’s Guild since 1454 as well as the medical teaching and research conducted at the Academic Gymnasium (Atheneum Gedanense) founded in 1558.

1950

Soon after World War II ended, Akademia Lekarska was founded in Gdańsk and in 1950 it was renamed to Akademia Medyczna (Medical Academy)

Among the professors of the newly-established university, there were many exceptional Polish scholars from pre-war Polish academic centers such as the University of Stefan Batory in Vilnius, who resettled in Gdańsk after their cities were incorporated into the Soviet Union.

The Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology was founded in 1993

The Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology was founded in 1993, a joint unit of the Medical University of Gdansk and the University of Gdańsk.

1999

The Nursing Programme began at the Faculty of Medicine

This was the first step towards forming the Faculty of Health Sciences.

2001

English Division of Faculty of Medicine was established

2006

The Faculty of Health Sciences with Subfaculty of Nursing was established

2008

The grand construction of the Clinical Hospital began

2009 MAY 19

The Medical Academy of Gdańsk was officially renamed to Medical University of Gdańsk

The new name confirmed ou University’s true rank and status.

 

2011

Completion of construction of the Invasive Medicine Centre

JUL 2012

The Faculty of Pharmacy with Subfaculty of Laboratory Medicine was formally recognized as a Leading National Research Centre (KNOW) for the years 2012-2017

2015

The cornerstone was set for construction of the Non-Invasive Medicine Centre (NIMC)

2018

Completion of construction of the Non-Invasive Medicine Centre

2019

The Medical University of Gdańsk received the status of a the Research University

2021

The first patients in the new part of the Non-Invasive Medicine Center

2023

Opening of the Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Support Center of MUG, UCC, and UCS
