Doctor Honoris Causa – honorary doctorates

The academic degree of Doctor Honoris Causa is conferred by universities upon individuals of exceptional merit. At the Medical University of Gdańsk, the tradition of awarding this highest academic distinction dates back to the mid-1960s. Since 1965, the title has been granted to 48 individuals. Among the recipients are distinguished scientists, physicians and specialists representing various fields of medicine, whose contributions have significantly advanced medical science both in Poland and internationally. In the year the distinction was awarded for the first time, it was conferred, among others, upon the ophthalmologist Ignacy Abramowicz, the surgeon Jacek Adams-Ray, and the anatomist and anthropologist Michał Reicher.
